Creating a cosy first home

When you first move into a flat or house when you’ve moved out of your parents’ home it can feel quite stark and barren. All the possessions that seemed to make your old bedroom feel fit to bursting point suddenly don’t take up too much space in your new place. It can feel like there’s too much empty space around.

Furnishing a flat or small house doesn’t have to be expensive. You just have to pick a few items with care.

A great space filler that’s really functional is a cheap dining table and chairs. You can use these for their obvious purpose, but the dining table can also double up as a desk for you to work at. If you’ve got a laptop, even better, as you can put it out of the way easily when you decide to host a dinner party - now that you’ve got your own place.

In the lounge, a fabric sofa will make the room feel warm and welcoming, and will probably be plenty big enough. Choose a sensible colour that you’ll like for a while – or get removable covers that you can switch to a different colour. It’s often wiser to choose a dark colour for a sofa to avoid it showing marks or stains.

You don’t really need any armchairs as long as you have one big sofa, and sometimes too many pieces of furniture will make even a decent size room look cluttered. If you have extra visitors, you can always add more seating by using the dining chairs.

Add some homeliness with a few framed prints on the walls and some side lamps to give a soft glow, rather than having the main lights on, and you’ll be well on your way to creating a cosy home environment.
